Rockdale Campus is located inside of the Rockdale Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Rockdale, Texas. 4-M Youth Services owns the Rockdale Center and the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission holds the license.
The Rockdale Center is a 67-bed locked-down facility serving both pre- and post-adjudicated youth. The facility primarily treats adolescents with drug and alcohol abuse problems, and sexual offenders. County juvenile probation departments place adolescents in the Rockdale center.
Rockdale school serves boys and girls ages 10 to 17. Our current enrollment is 60 students with about 30% in special education.
Our school staff includes a principal, educational diagnostician, registrar, core content teachers (math, science, social studies, and English), a P.E. teacher, and two instructional assistants. Additionally, the campus has a special education teacher that provides resource classes and tutoring. We also use the C-Scope curriculum, and students have access to a full range of computer-assisted instruction including Accelerated Math and Study Island.
On our Rockdale Campus, we use the KEYS Expectations to encourage appropriate student behavior.

To the parents of the residents at the Rockdale Detention Center, John H. Wood Jr. Charter School is providing a strong teaching staff for your child. The teachers are caring and ready to create a positive learning environment. Security, therapy, and education are all involved in making your child's time successful. Each year is a new beginning. Encourage your student to participate in all the activities and to work hard in school.
Instructional Activities
Students are involved in different instructional activities promoting student participation:
- Reading Club - Students are encouraged to read as many books as they can, and document on a form developed by the teacher's knowledge of the book read. Prizes are awarded to the best three readers.
- Veteran's Day Assembly - Students participate in researching Medal of Honor winners. They prepare a paper and poster on the heroes, and the top students receive recognition during the assembly.
- Texas State Technical College Recruiting Assembly - TSTC will visit our campus and inform the students on all the programs available to them and how they can apply for admission.
- Career Cruising - A computer program that allows the students to research career interest.
- Fitness Gram - A P.E. program that promotes wellness. Students work daily on physical activities that encourage good health. At the end of the semester, they are tested so they can see their progress.
- Learning to Play Chess - A math activity that develops thinking skills.

ELA Holocaust Program
The last six weeks the ELA classes started a project on the Holocaust. The Holocaust was the state-sponsored persecution and murder of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime. The classes read the book "Night," one of the most read books about the Holocaust. The book is the story of a young 14-year-old boy who survived Auschwitz.
The students saw videos and discussed the impact of this persecution. The students created butterflies representing the one and half million children killed in the Holocaust. We will send the butterflies to the Houston Holocaust Museum for them to display. ELA teacher T. Vance coordinated the project.
Student Poem
A Rockdale student wrote this poem titled "What Freedom Means to Me" and was the winner for the Veteran's Day Assembly.
